Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC)

certified evaluation and management coder The Certified Evaluation and Management Coder credential (CEMC) is offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). This credential focuses mainly on an individual's detailed knowledge of E/M codes.

The CEMC examination is a 150 question, five hour and forty minute exam. This exam covers E/M codes in detail including the three key components of an E/M (with emphasis on MDM) and documentation guidelines. An examinees knowledge of both 1995 and 1997 E/M documentation guidelines is also tested, along with thier knowledge of Medicare guidelines regarding attestation statements for both MLPs and Residents, time based coding, NCCI edits, proper modifier selection, medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.

Individuals who wish to obtain the CEMC are encouraged to have prior education and experience, but it is not required. In addition the AAPC recommends that individuals purchase the CEMC study guide and practice exam.

Although the CEMC credential is not one of the top two coding credentials sought after it is a great compliment to existing credentials. Individuals holding dual credentials (Ex. CPC and CEMC) have marked themselves as experts in two areas and gain a competitive edge over individuals holding single credentials.

Because E/M codes are audited more than any other CPT code having this specialty credential will not only make you a valuable coder, but may also open doors to a career in auditing.

CEUs

The CEMC credential requires individuals to earn CEUs in order to maintain them.

The AAPC requires CEUs based on the number of credentials held by them.

For example: 1 credential requires 36 CEUs every 2 years and 2 credentials require 48 CEUs every 2 years.
