Why the apprentice designation exists
Coding on the job is harder than answering a timed exam question. Real records are incomplete, payer rules vary, and coders must query providers when documentation is unclear. AAPC uses the apprentice stage to separate exam knowledge from demonstrated workplace experience.
A CPC-A holds a real credential and maintains it the same way as a CPC: an active AAPC membership and continuing education.
Three ways to remove the "A"

Coding experience gained before and after you pass the exam both count.
Getting the paperwork right
AAPC sets specific rules for verification letters. They must:
- come from an employer, supervisor or HR department
- be on company letterhead
- state the coding work performed, with start and end dates
- be hand-signed, dated and include current contact details
- be uploaded in a non-editable format such as PDF
For an outside course, submit an instructor letter, a certificate or a transcript showing at least 80 contact hours. CEUs do not count toward this requirement. For Practicode, AAPC requires at least 600 cases with an overall score of 70% or higher.
Finding experience as a new coder
The usual challenge is the first coding job. Practical routes include externships through your training program, billing or front-office roles in practices that let you move into coding, charge-entry and coding-support positions, and smaller practices that are more willing to train.
